Austrian Ski Championships 1907

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first main association race of the Austrian Ski Association , at the same time the first Austrian Ski Championship , was held from January 5th to 7th, 1907 in Kitzbühel in the Kronland Tyrol .

Award

On the occasion of the annual general meeting of 1906, the Association of Styrian Skiers was commissioned by the Austrian Ski Association to host the first association race , but for unspecified reasons offered the organization to the winter sports club in Kitzbühel in December . He announced the competitions for January 5th and 6th, 1907.

Sports Committee

The responsible sports committee, representing the Austrian Ski Association, included Mr Walter from Hohenelbe , the painter and high alpinist Gustav Jahn from Vienna and Viktor Sohm (President of the Central European Ski Association). The mayor of Kitzbühel at the time, Franz Reisch, was responsible for the preparations .

Attendees

The competition was advertised as an open championship , so athletes from abroad could also apply for the title of "Austrian Ski Champion pro 1907" .

With Rudolf Biehler from Freiburg , his brother Bruno Biehler from Munich and the Austrians Fritz Miller and Fridolin Hohenleitner from Innsbruck , four athletes submitted their entries for the championship. In the early years of championship-driven winter racing, this was a very common number of participants in Central Europe.

Competitions

Jump run

The senior jump was held on January 6th. In addition to the participants in the Austrian Championship, three other jumpers had named for the ski jumping. Each participant had to complete three jumps, the best of which was included in the rating. In addition to the distance, the number of jumps made also decided the ranking.

Cross-country skiing

The cross-country race (then called "endurance run") was scheduled for the morning of January 5th. The route led southwest of Kitzbühel on the heights of the Hahnenkamm over a length of 12.8 km around the competition site to the finish on the Hinterbräufelde. The starting point was at 1,280 meters, the highest point on the route at 1,716 m. There was an incline of 522 m and an altitude difference of 1,022 m on the descent.

Due to the stormy snowfall that had been going on for days, the tracks left by the members of the Kitzbühel winter sports club soon became unrecognizable. The four cross-country skiers waited together on the way after they could no longer see the prescribed route in the snowstorm and fog and only reached the finish after two hours.

The race was not counted and had to be rescheduled on Monday, January 7th, on a greatly shortened route. With the brothers Biehler and Miller, only three runners had decided to take part on Monday.
