Attendees

There were numerous registrations from athletes from the German Reich and Switzerland for the international open Austrian championship of 1914 . From Austria , mainly active players from Styria and Bohemia as well as the defending champion Sepp Bildstein from Vorarlberg named .

The appearance of the American mountaineer Oliver Perry-Smith , who lives in Saxony , was eagerly awaited.

In the preliminary reports, defeating him was most likely to go to last year's championship runner-up, Paul Rotter . The Prague resident, who was in Hall in Tirol at the time , was in excellent shape, shortly before that he had won the Tyrolean Ski Championship and was also awarded the prize for the most beautiful ski jump. After an excellent second place in cross-country skiing, Rotter suffered an injury in jumping, which is why he lost a top position.

It was even worse for Rotter a few days after the championship when he lost his balance after jumping 25 meters from the hill in Hall in Tirol and fell over the embankment into the adjacent Inn . He came across a protruding tree trunk and was taken to the local hospital with serious internal injuries and unconscious.

The participation of the Viennese alpinist and painter Erwin Merlet and the then still very young racing driver Walter Delmár from the Hungarian part of the monarchy are worth mentioning .
