Austrian Ski Championships 1908
The 2nd Austrian Ski Championship was held from February 9th to 10th, 1908 in the Pinzgau winter sports resort of Zell am See in the Kronland Salzburg region . For Austrian ski champion for the year 1908 was crowned with a second place in ski jumping and a win in the long run Fritz Miller from Innsbruck .

The championship was held as part of the big winter sports festival in Zell, which lasted from February 9th to 11th and included international competitions in tobogganing , bobsleigh , jumping , cross-country skiing , women's skiing , figure skating and speed skating . The Zell am See winter sports association and the Austrian Ski Association were responsible for the orientation and organization . The event suffered from large amounts of fresh snow and could only be held with great difficulty. The winter sports festivals in Kitzbühel and Salzburg that were scheduled shortly thereafter had to be canceled this year for the same reason.
For the participants, a welcome ceremony was held in the hall of the Hotel Lebzelter, accompanied by music by the Zell string orchestra. On behalf of the market town of Zell am See, Mayor Dr. Müller, among others, the Presidium of the Central European Ski Association (MESV) , the members of the Austrian Ski Club, the Austrian Ice Skating Association, the Academic Ski Club from Munich and Innsbruck and the representatives of the Arlberg Ski Club . The expected members of the Ski Club Of Great Britain arrived late during the night. As part of the event, sports and ski opticon images from previous winter sports festivals in Zell am See, Kitzbühel and the Arlberg were shown.
Well-known participants were the Viennese alpinist and painter Gustav Jahn , who was able to finish the championship in second place, and the German skiing pioneer and later architect Bruno Biehler from Munich, who was able to decide the jump for himself.
Competitions
Jumping Seniors
The senior jump run, which is also part of the Austrian Ski Championship, was started on Sunday, February 9th at 2:30 p.m. with (depending on the sources) 12 or 13 participants. The first three winners received prizes of honor that were presented at the award ceremony in the Hotel Krone that evening. Archduke Eugen donated a silver liqueur service for first place , which was presented to Bruno Biehler from Munich .
The longest jump of the day was achieved by Hauptmann von Eccher with 23 meters. In addition to the distance, the number of jumps made was decisive for the ranking. Around 2/3 of the jumps could be performed standing. The width of the sixth-placed Otto Rasim is given differently with 15 and 16 m. The participation of the audience was rated by the journalists as very lively and the performance of the jumpers as excellent .

Cross-country skiing
The alpine long-distance run, which is part of the championship, was held on February 10th. Of the seven registered participants in the Austrian Ski Championship, four were excluded from the long-distance alpine run after the jump due to insufficient performance. Only Fritz Miller , Gustav Jahn and Hans Handl ( SC Arlberg ), who could not compete due to a minor injury in jumping, were allowed to participate.
The two remaining championship participants started together with the runners of the mountain guide race and the participants for the price of the market town of Zell am See. It started at noon on the Schmittenhöhe . The route ran over a distance of seven kilometers and was particularly difficult to master due to a 30 to 50 cm thick layer of fresh snow. The fastest runner crossed the finish line in 24 minutes and 30 seconds.

Compound run
In the combination of jumping and cross-country skiing (now known as Nordic Combination ), Fritz Miller prevailed over Gustav Jahn . The Innsbrucker was crowned Austrian ski champion in 1908 .
