(289586) Shackleton is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered by the Swiss physics teacher and amateur astronomer Michel Ory at the Jura Observatory ( IAU code 185) in Vicques in the canton of Jura on April 3, 2005. Ory was director of the observatory. An unconfirmed sighting (2003 UT 289 ) of the asteroid had already taken place on September 28, 2003 as part of the Spacewatch II project at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona .
In a broader sense, the asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ).
(289586) Shackleton is named after the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton . It was named on December 10, 2011. A lunar crater in the southern lunar hemisphere was named after Ernest Shackleton in 1994 : Shackleton lunar crater .
