(6124) Mecklenburg is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen on September 29, 1987 at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033). An unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid (1971 SM) had already occurred on September 16, 1971 at the Felix Aguilar Observatory in Argentina .

In early editions of the AstDyS-2 database, (6124) Mecklenburg is assigned to the Hilda group, an asteroid family that moves in an orbital resonance of 3: 2 with the planet Jupiter around the sun . This group is named after the asteroid (153) Hilda . The database has been defining its own asteroid family since mid-2013, in which (6124) Mecklenburg is the eponymous asteroid. As of March 2018, the Mecklenburg family includes 78 asteroids, for example (14195) 1998 XD 51 , (17212) 2000 AV 183 , (32455) 2000 SW 60 and (99862) Kenlevin .

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic investigation by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (6124) Mecklenburg assumes a dark surface, so roughly speaking it could be around trade a C asteroid .

The orbit of the asteroid was secured in 1994 so that numbering could be assigned. (6124) Mecklenburg was named on March 17, 1995 at the suggestion of Freimut Börngen after the Mecklenburg region in honor of the 1000th anniversary celebration in 1995. The name Mecklenburg ("Mikelenburg") appears for the first time in a document from the year 995.
