(6266) Letzel is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on October 4, 1986 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already occurred on August 20 (1979 QO 7 ) and September 24 (1979 SL 3 ) 1979 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj .

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a publication from 1995 (et al.) That (6266) Letzel belonged to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne . In the more recent AstDyS-2 database, (6266) Letzel is listed as a member of the Levin family, named after the asteroid (2076) Levin . According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (6266) Letzel assumes a bright surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be around trade an S asteroid .

The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (6266) Letzel are almost identical to those of five smaller ones (if one considers the absolute brightness of 15.6, 15.4, 15.9, 16.5 and 17.9 compared to 13, 5) Asteroids: (21465) Michelepatt , (43740) 1981 EM 9 , (65743) 1993 TY 19 , (168820) 2000 SK 266 and (219999) 2002 PP 26 .

(6266) Letzel is named after the Czech architect Jan Letzel . The name was given by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on April 2nd, 1999 at the suggestion of the Czech astronomer Jana Tichá .
