(6978) Hironaka is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 12 September 1993 by the Japanese amateur astronomers Kin EnDate and Kazuro Watanabe at Kitami Observatory ( IAU code 400) on Hokkaido was discovered.
The asteroid belongs to the Innes family, an asteroid family named after (1658) Innes .
The celestial body was named on August 8, 1998 after the Japanese mathematician Heisuke Hironaka (* 1931), who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 for his work in the field of algebraic geometry .
