(8722) Schirra is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 19 August 1996 by the American US astronomer Richard G. Davis at the Observatory of the University of Granville ( IAU code in 825) Ohio was discovered.
The asteroid was named on October 13, 2000 after the American astronaut Walter Schirra (1923-2007), who was the only one of the first three US space programs - Mercury , Gemini and Apollo - to be actively involved as a space traveler.
