(8993) Ingstad is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered by the Danish astronomer Richard Martin West on October 30, 1980 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).

Mean distance from the Sun ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid roughly correspond to the Phocaea family, a group of asteroids named after (25) Phocaea . The solar orbit of (8993) Ingstad is strongly inclined at more than 23 ° compared to the ecliptic of the solar system , which is characteristic of Phocaea asteroids.

(8993) Ingstad was named on June 24, 2002 after the Norwegian archaeologist and adventurer Helge Ingstad (1899-2001). The naming was based on suggestions from a competition that the radio show Nitimen of the Norwegian radio station NRK P1 held in cooperation with the Astrofestival 2001.
