2-Ethylhexanoic acid is a chemical compound from the group of carboxylic acids . Their salts are called 2-ethylhexanoates.

Extraction and presentation

2-Ethylhexanoic acid is produced from 2-ethyl-1-hexanol or 2-ethylhexanal by oxidation .

properties

2-Ethylhexanoic acid is a very difficult to ignite, not very volatile, colorless to yellowish liquid with a faint odor. Your aqueous solution is acidic.

use

2-Ethylhexanoic acid is used for the production of metal salts ( metal soaps , so-called octoates ) and for the modification of acrylic resins . It also serves as an intermediate product for the production of siccatives ( heavy metal soaps ) for lacquers and paints, enamel , catalysts for the oxidation of hydrocarbons , thickeners for mineral oils and petrol, wetting agents, emulsifiers and plasticizers , stabilizers for silicones, corrosion inhibitors, fungicides and peroxyesters.

The sodium salt of 2-ethylhexanoic acid ( sodium 2-ethylhexanoate ) is used as a substitute for pentachlorophenol in the wood industry. Another use is as an inhibitor in cooling liquid.

safety instructions

2-Ethylhexanoic acid is classified as toxic to reproduction category 3. The vapors of 2-ethylhexanoic acid can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 114 ° C, ignition temperature 310 ° C).

In 2012, 2-ethylhexanoic acid was included in the EU's ongoing action plan ( CoRAP ) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) as part of substance evaluation . The effects of the substance on human health and the environment are re-evaluated and, if necessary, follow-up measures are initiated. Ingestion of 2-ethylhexanoic acid was caused by concerns about its classification as a CMR substance, consumer use , high (aggregated) tonnage, high risk characterization ratio (RCR) and widespread use. The re-evaluation took place from 2012 and was carried out by Spain . A final report was then published.
