Western Mediterranean

  • The First Punic War ends with the victory of Rome over Carthage. The peace treaty ( Lutatius treaty ) contains the following conditions: Sicilia becomes the first province to be conquered by Rome ( Syracuse remains independent, but allied with Rome); Carthage must surrender its Roman prisoners of war without compensation, but pay a large sum to get the Carthaginian soldiers back from Rome; Carthage has to pay a total of 3,200 talents in war compensation (1,000 immediately, 2,200 within 10 years).
  • The considerable financial burden of the peace treaty on Carthage leads to a three-year uprising by its mercenaries , whose wages the defeated state can no longer pay.
  • The Etruscan Falerii rebelled against Roman rule, but was soon subjugated again.
  • Foundation of Spoleto ( Spoletium ) by the Romans

Eastern Mediterranean

  • Attalus I succeeds his uncle Eumenes I as ruler of Pergamon .
  • Peace agreement in the Third Syrian War between the Seleucid Empire under Seleukos II and Egypt under Ptolemy III. : Egypt finally rises to a great power and receives almost the entire coast of Asia Minor between Cilicia and Ephesus, also the coast of Thrace and Seleukia, the port of Antioch, and the protectorate over the Cyclades. The Seleucid Empire, which was also weakened by attacks by the Parthians in the east, reached its first low point in its history.
  • The Spartan King Agis IV is murdered by domestic opponents of his radical reforms. Successor is Eudamidas III.
