- Summer: Battle of Spartolos . The Athenians under their general Xenophon march to Thrace to attack Chalcis . After they burned down the grain fields at Spartolos , they are challenged to battle by a united army of Chalcis, Spartolos and Olynthos . The Athenian hoplites are initially successful, but can no longer withstand after the arrival of reinforcements from Olynth and are wiped out by opposing light infantry ( Peltast ) and cavalry, whereby all three military leaders and 480 warriors perish, the survivors flee to Potidaia.
- Battle of Stratos . The summer of 429 BC BC is marked by a Peloponnesian offensive in north-western Greece. The Spartan Nauarch Knemos is entrusted with the management of a combined land-sea campaign, which is to eliminate the Athenian allies Akarnanien , Zakynthos and Kephallenia and at the same time take the Athenian naval base Naupaktos at the exit of the Gulf of Corinth . Knemos can cross over to Akarnania with 1000 hoplites without being noticed and marches together with several allies ( Ambrakians , Chaonians , Illyrians etc.) to Stratos , an ally of Akarnania. However, their advance is stopped before the gates of the capital Aitolia , the Illyrians are crushed and the Spartans are forced to return to their fleet.
- Battle of Naupaktos . The Athenian admiral Phormion defeated the numerically superior fleet from Corinth in the First Battle of Naupaktos with his fleet of 20 ships . The Corinthian fleet commanded by Machaon , Isocrates and Agatharchidas consists of 47 ships, which are supposed to support the campaign of the Spartan general Knemos in Akarnania. In the Second Battle of Naupaktos , the Athenian fleet is faced with an even greater superiority of 77 ships from the now combined Corinthian-Spartan fleet. Amazingly, the Athenians succeed in forcing their opponents to retreat to Corinth despite losses.
- October / November: The Peloponnesians, led by Knemos and Brasidas , with 40 ships from Megara and others, attempt an attack against Piraeus from Nisaia . However, unfavorable winds keep them away from their target, so that they only attack Salamis , but their fortress resists the siege.
