Rollercoaster (Original: Rollercoaster ) is an American feature film by director James Goldstone from 1977. It was shot in the wake of the catastrophe film wave of the 1970s and is sometimes classified in the genre, but its structure and dramaturgy are clear a thriller . The roller coaster was shot using the then innovative Sensurround technology.
action
A roller coaster accident in an amusement park , in which a fully occupied train whizzing out of a curve into the crowd turns out to be an act of sabotage, which is followed shortly after by further attacks in other parks. During the first investigation, the technical inspector, Harry Calder, who is responsible for the investigation, tracks down a blackmailer who is trying to extort a million dollars from the operators of the amusement parks concerned.
Calder calls in the FBI and is soon chosen by the criminal to deliver the ransom to him at the amusement park in Richmond. Despite preparations by the police, the blackmailer managed to escape with the money. But it is of no use to him since the dollar bills have been made recognizable. A new act of sabotage is looming. Another last-minute roller coaster accident can be prevented in the dramatic finale. The escaping perpetrator is eventually hit by a roller coaster train and killed.
criticism
The lexicon of the international film saw a "(i) n the treatment of the subject of superficial, but largely exciting film, which concentrates entirely on the sensurround shock effects and the parodistically drawn cat-and-mouse game between the assassin and security officer."
useful information
- The three amusement parks and associated roller coasters featured in the film are:
- Ocean View Amusement Park in Norfolk , Virginia , USA (Roller Coaster: Rocket )
- Kings Dominion in Virginia, USA (roller coaster: Racer 75 )
- Magic Mountain (in German dubbing : Zauberberg , today Six Flags Magic Mountain ) in Valencia , California , USA (roller coaster: New Revolution )
- Roller coaster was one of five feature films made in the 1970s using the special low-frequency process Sensurround . In a cinema in the US city of Hackensack , part of the ceiling fell down during the showing of the film and damaged ten seats (which no one was sitting on). After this incident, there were no more demonstrations with Sensurround.
- The rock band appearing towards the end of the film during the amusement park opening ceremony are the Sparks .
- The filming there took place during sunny, but very cool autumn days. However, since the film was on July 4th, all extras were required to wear light clothing in the middle of summer, which was very uncomfortable in view of the low temperatures and long waiting times on set.
- The film marks 14-year-old Helen Hunt's debut in a motion picture.
