Adalbert Spányik from Dömeháza
Adalbert Spányik von Dömeháza , also Adalbert von Spányik , baptized Adalbertus Joanes Maria Spányik (born January 1, 1858 in Pressburg ; † June 27, 1930 in Sopron ) was an Austro-Hungarian officer and the last adjutant of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.
Life
Adalbert Spányik came from an Austro-Hungarian family with roots in today's Slovakian Dömeháza, Hont county (Slovak Domaníky , Okres Krupina ) and was a son of the lawyer Carl Spányik and his wife Carola, nee. Baintner. The painter Kornel Spányik was his brother only 10 months younger. He embarked on the officer career. On June 1, 1879, he received his officer's license as a lieutenant in the 12th kuk military police battalion . On May 1, 1886, he was promoted to lieutenant in the 11th Feldjäger Battalion and on November 1, 1892, he was made captain 2nd class.
In 1905 he was assigned the rank of major to the emperor as adjutant wing . He held this position for four years, and then filled military positions. In 1910, Lieutenant Colonel Spanyik and his descendants were given the Hungarian nobility with the title "von Dömeháza". In 1913 he was colonel in command of the infantry cadet school in Marburg an der Drau .

In 1913 he received the post of lieutenant and guard house commander of the royal Hungarian bodyguard . At the emperor's request, he was also appointed wing adjutant. He began his service on May 26, 1915 and accompanied the emperor's last days until his death on November 21, 1916. After the death of Franz Joseph, Spányik was awarded the Franz Joseph Cross for his outstanding service . With effect from May 1, 1916, he was appointed Major General or Lieutenant Field Marshal .
After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, he retired as commander of the Ku bodyguard . Spányik chose Hungarian citizenship .
Spányik was married to Irene von Spányik, b. from Bornemisza from Adámfölde and Kálnó. Their only daughter Marie Alice married the kuk Oberleutnant Louis (Aloys) von Walterskirchen Freiherr zu Wolfsthal . The son Mario Spányik von Dömeháza also embarked on a military career, from 1939 he was the Hungarian consul elect in Graz.

In his diary, Spányik described life at the court during the First World War . According to the Austrian War Archives, the handwritten original was lost in 1945, but there is a 45-page, machine-written transcript . This was made available to the author and columnist Georg Markus by Spányik's descendants on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Emperor Franz Joseph in 2016 .
