Adam Ant is the stage name of the British singer and musician Stuart Leslie Goddard (born November 3, 1954 in London ). Between 1977 and 1982 he was the front man of the successful punk and new wave band Adam & the Ants and then began a solo career.
biography
The band was formed in 1977 and consisted of Goddard from Lester Square (guitar), Andy Warren (bass) and Paul Flanagan (drums). However, the line-up changed several times until the recording of the first album in 1979. The former manager of the Sex Pistols , Malcolm McLaren , met the band in October 1979, which until then had only been moderately successful. McLaren signed the then Ants members Matthew Ashman (guitar), Leigh Gorman (bass) and David Barbarossa (drums) for the new band Bow Wow Wow . Goddard then again formed new Ants, now consisting of Marco Pirroni (guitar), Kevin Mooney (bass) and the two drummers Terry Lee Miall and Merrick, real name Chris Hughes . For the album Prince Charming , Gary Tibbs from Roxy Music joined in.
Since 1982 the records have only been released under the name Adam Ant (a sound pun with the English 'adamant' = rock hard, rock solid), with Phil Collins both playing drums and playing the drums for the singles Strip and Puss'n Boots on the LP Strip who produced the songs.
In 1985 Adam Ant performed the song Vive le Rock on Live Aid , but then interrupted his musical career for several years. Only since 1990 have new publications followed at longer intervals.
He had his greatest hits in the first half of the 1980s with Antmusic , Stand and Deliver , Dog Eat Dog , Prince Charming , Ant Rap and Goody Two Shoes .
Since the mid-1980s he tried harder as an actor , both in feature films (including Nomads , Cold Steel , Trust Me ) and television series (including Sledge Hammer , Ironically Alaska , Nikita ) and on stage ( Funeral Games , Entertaining Mr. Sloane ), his only leading role was in the vampire comedy Love Bites .
Plans for a 1980s tribute tour had to be abandoned in 2002 because Adam Ant suffered from bipolar disorder . In 2003 he recorded a new version of his hit Stand and Deliver , with changed lyrics, under the title Save the Gorilla . This and a few other songs, which were supposed to appear on a maxi CD for the benefit of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund , were never officially released (after an objection from co-composer Marco Pirroni and the record company).
On September 24, 2007, Adam stood on stage for the first time in almost 12 years at the presentation of his autobiography Stand and Deliver in Bloomsbury (England). Accompanied by his long-time friend Dave Pash, a classical guitarist, he played acoustic versions of his own pieces as well as cover versions and read parts from his biography. Adam left the stage after several encores with the promise that there would be "more of Adam Ant". A recording of this performance was released on CD at the end of 2008 under the title Live at the Bloomsbury , which is only available online.
Many musicians name Adam Ant as an influence, e.g. B. Elastica , Gene, Nine Inch Nails , Client , Robbie Williams , Kaiser Chiefs, and Marilyn Manson .
