Adolf Helbling

Adolf Helbling (born September 15, 1824 in Buchen, † August 14, 1897 in Karlsruhe ) was a German civil engineer , architect and railway construction clerk in the Grand Ducal Baden .

Life

After attending the Karlsruhe Lyceum and passing the Abitur exams, Adolf Helbling studied construction at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic . In 1844 he became a member of the Corps Franconia Karlsruhe and on October 6, 1845 was one of the founders of the short-lived Corps Vandalia Karlsruhe. After completing the prescribed courses in mathematics and construction, he worked practically and theoretically in the office for buildings of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways with Friedrich Eisenlohr . In the winter semester of 1848/1849 he studied at the building school of the Munich Art Academy . After passing the state examination , he became a Baden construction intern in September 1850. In 1855 he received a one-year vacation for an educational trip to Italy supported by the Fund for the Arts and Sciences. After his return he supervised the work on the castle church and the storage buildings in Pforzheim for the Karlsruhe district building inspection . In 1858 he moved to the Karlsruhe Railway Building Inspectorate, where he worked on the construction of the Karlsruhe – Mühlacker railway line . In 1859 he was appointed provisional director of the Karlsruhe Railway Building Inspection and was transferred there in 1860 when the inspection was relocated to Pforzheim. In 1861 he moved to Heidelberg to set up the building inspection required for the construction of the Heidelberg – Mosbach railway line . In 1862 he became a building inspector and director of the Heidelberg Building Inspection , which from 1863 had its headquarters in Mosbach . In October 1867 he was promoted to the building councilor and appointed technical councilor at the state management of the transport authorities.

In the early 1870s, Helbling created his most important architectural works, the reception building for the new Mannheim main station and the building of the general management of the Baden State Railways. In 1876 he was appointed director of the structural engineering office of the Baden State Railways General Directorate and in 1878 he was appointed director of the building department. In 1880 he was appointed senior building officer and in 1883 building director. In 1887 he was retired . From 1883 until his retirement he was a member of the building commission for the preservation of Heidelberg Castle .
