Adolf Johann I (Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg)
Adolf Johann I von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (born October 11, 1629 in Stegeborg Castle ; † October 14, 1689 ibid) was a Swedish Imperial Marshal , Duke of Stegeborg and Palatinate-Kleeburg.
Life
He was the youngest (surviving) son of Johann Kasimir von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (1589-1652) and Katharina Wasa . His father came to Sweden in 1622 and married Princess Katharina there. His older brother Karl Gustav inherited the title of Duke of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg in 1652, but passed it on to his younger brother Adolf Johann in 1654 when he himself became King of Sweden as Karl X. Gustav after the abdication of his cousin Christina .
Adolf Johann was governor-general of Västergötland , Dalsland , Värmland and Halland from 1651 to 1654 . From 1653 to 1654 he was also the Swedish Reichsmarschall and successor to Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie , the husband of his sister Marie Euphrosine .
In the Second Northern War he was able to beat a Polish-Lithuanian army on April 27, 1656 near Gnesen (Kłecko). Between 1657 and 1659, as Governor General, he was in command of the troops that remained in the now hostile Prussia . Johann Adolf kept commuting between Germany and Sweden. But he could not prevent the French from occupying parts of his duchy. His residence Katherinenburg Castle and Kleeburg Castle in Lower Alsace were destroyed in the wars.

In 1649 Adolf Johann married Elsa Beata Persdotter Brahe (1629–1653), the daughter of Per Brahe the Younger . In 1653 their son Gustav Adolf was born. But he died a few months later.
After her death in 1661 he married Else Elisabeth Nielsdotter Brahe , the daughter of General Nils Brahe . He had the following children with her:
