Adolf Franz Schmidt (born February 27, 1836 in Karlsruhe , † January 30, 1917 in Heidelberg ) was a German geologist , metallurgist and university professor .

Life

Adolf Schmidt, son of Baden officials Franz Schmidt, 1854 high school graduate at the Lyceum in Mannheim , then studied mathematics , physics , chemistry , geology, mineralogy , and mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Karlsruhe , where he became a member of the fraternity Corps Bavaria Karlsruhe was. In 1857 he switched to the subjects of metallurgy and mining science at the Bergakademie Freiberg . After passing the mountain and Hüttenmännische state exam in Mannheim in 1859, enrolled him at the University of Heidelberg , 1860 took place there his doctorate to Dr. phil. insigni cum laude with a major in mineralogy and a minor in chemistry and physics.

Adolf Schmidt subsequently worked in Bohemia , in 1862 he joined the Baden state service in the role of mining assistant to the grand ducal steelworks administration in Kandern , and one year later he was appointed to the board of the grand ducal steelworks administration in Zizenhausen . After the iron and steel works had ceased in 1866, Adolf Schmidt moved to Troy in the US state of New York in 1867 , where he worked in steel production at the Bessemer company, before he took up a geological position at the Geological Survey of Missouri in 1872 , which he held until 1875 .

After his return to Germany , Adolf Schmidt completed his habilitation in 1876 as a private lecturer in the subjects of geology and metallurgy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, where he was promoted to associate professor in 1880, and to full honorary professor in 1913. His main work is the three-volume comprehensive description of the geology of the Münstertal in the Baden Black Forest thanks to the thoroughly collected and presented actual materials.
