biography

family

Adolf was the youngest son of Major General Rudolf Johann von Brudermann and his wife Gisela von Barbaczy , who together had three sons and a daughter. In addition to Adolf himself, there were the brothers Anton (1847–1881) and Rudolf (1851–1941), both of whom also embarked on military careers, as well as their sister Gisela Elisabeth (1852–1917). On March 6, 1886, he married Amalie Franziska Juliane (nee Strzygowski) in Biala , with whom he had three daughters and a son.

Education and career before the war

Adolf began his military training in the cadet institute in Marburg and subsequently, like his two older brothers, entered the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt in 1869 . In 1874 he successfully left the academy and was put into service with the Uhlan Regiment No. 1 . After his promotions to first lieutenant on May 1, 1879 and to captain of 2nd class on November 1, 1889, he became an instructor at the military riding training institute (training school for riding instructors) on May 1, 1890 and remained there - with the exception of a few interruptions Troop service with the 1st Uhlan Regiment between 1894 and April 1899 - until July 20, 1904.

After he was promoted to major on May 1, 1897 and to lieutenant colonel on November 1, 1900 , he ended his career as a trainer at the riding school and became regimental commander when he took over command of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment at the end of July 1904 . On November 5, 1904, he was promoted to colonel . The satisfactory management of his regiment earned him the Order of the Iron Crown. In April 1910, Adolf von Brudermann took command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade in Marburg and was promoted to major general on October 28 of the same year . After he was appointed commander of the 3rd Cavalry Division in Vienna in June 1913, he was also promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal on November 3, 1913 . Achievement of this command and rank was extremely unusual for an officer who had not attended war school. Under normal circumstances he would have reached the high point of his career and an early retirement in prospect, but the outbreak of the First World War changed this.

First World War and post-war period

Adolf Ritter von Brudermann remained in his position as the commander of the 3rd Cavalry Division until December 1916. Between June and August, and between October and December 1916, he was also given command of the newly established "Brudermann Cavalry Corps". Due to terrible losses, this corps was disbanded twice, each time shortly after it was set up. His deteriorating health forced him to give up his post at the end of 1916 and apply for a transfer to a pension, which was also approved in March 1917. He was retired with the rank of General of the Cavalry. After that he lived withdrawn from the public, known as "the other" brother man, near his brother Rudolf in the 3rd district of Vienna until his death shortly after the Second World War . On October 26, 1945 he was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
