Rudolf Nikolaus Ritter von Brudermann (born January 9, 1851 in Gyöngyös , Hungary, † January 15, 1941 in Kaltenleutgabe , Lower Austria) was an Austro-Hungarian general of the cavalry .

Life

He was the son of Major General Rudolf Johann von Brudermann (1810–1889) and his wife Gisela von Barbaczy (1815–1855). His brothers Anton and Adolf were also destined for military careers. He married Marie Albine, née Jürgens, on July 2, 1878, and the marriage remained childless.

Early military career

Rudolf began his training at the cadet institute in Hainburg and attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt from 1865 to 1869 . On September 1, 1869 he was retired to lieutenant in the kuk Uhlan regiment "Alexander II. Emperor of Russia" No. 11 . On May 1, 1874 he was promoted to first lieutenant , after attending the war school in Vienna , he joined the general staff in 1874 . On November 1, 1877 he was promoted to captain and transferred to the kuk Uhlan regiment “Fürst zu Schwarzenberg” No. 2 , where he was promoted to Rittmeister .

On April 1, 1878, he left the army and on January 1, 1879, he reported back to active service and was assigned to the Kuk Uhlan Regiment "Ritter von Brudermann" No. 1 . From 1880 to 1884 he worked as a teacher in the cavalry cadet school in Mährisch Weißkirchen and was then assigned to the kuk dragoon regiment "Prince of Windisch-Graetz" No. 14 . He was promoted to major on November 1, 1885 , to lieutenant colonel on November 1, 1888, and to colonel in 1891 . In March 1895 he received the Order of the Iron Crown, 3rd class. In March 1897 the 15th Cavalry Brigade was taken over in Tarnopol and on May 18, 1897 he was promoted to major general . From March 1900 to the end of March 1904 he was in command of the 7th Cavalry Troop Division in Krakow . On May 1, 1901, he was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal and honored in April 1904 with the Grand Cross of the Leopold Order . In July 1906 he took over the position of kuk general cavalry inspector as the successor to the resigned Archduke Otto and rose to general of the cavalry on April 26, 1907. In February 1907 he was appointed colonel owner of the Uhlan Regiment No. 1 and in August 1908 was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, 1st class. He rejected all new weapons such as machine guns and prevented necessary innovations in the cavalry.

In the world war

On the eve of the First World War , he was still General Cavalry Inspector. After the mobilization , he commanded the 3rd Army in Eastern Galicia in August 1914 . The heavy defeats of his troops at Zloczow and on the Gnila Lipa caused enormous losses for the Austro-Hungarian troops in the battle of Galicia . After losing Lviv , he was recalled from his post on September 4th. Rudolf von Brudermann left the army on November 23, 1914 at his own request and was officially retired on March 24, 1915. He spent his pension in Vienna. He was buried with his wife in the Vienna Central Cemetery .
