Habit, leaves, inflorescences and fruits of Aglaonema costatum

The cob filaments ( Aglaonema ) are a tropical plant genus from the family of the arum plants (Araceae). The botanical genus name refers to the shiny stamens and is derived from the Greek words agláos for wonderful and néma for thread. Varieties of this genus are very popular as house plants because they also thrive in shady locations and their leaves are beautifully drawn.

Dissemination and use

Aglaonema species are common in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia (Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, South China to Thailand).

It is used as an ornamental plant for parks and gardens in tropical countries. In frost-prone areas it only thrives as a houseplant in heated rooms. They are also very suitable for hydroponics .

description

Habit and leaves

Aglaonema species are evergreen , perennial herbaceous plants . Most species grow with upright, a few species also with shallow creeping shoot axes . The plants reach heights of growth between 40 cm and 120 cm.

The spirally arranged, simple, oval to lanceolate leaves usually have long petioles. The characteristic pattern of the up to 30 cm long leaves makes Aglaonema species and varieties a popular decorative plant. Depending on the type and variety, there are different spots and marbling in white-silvery to light green on a strong green background.

Inflorescence and fruit

They are single sexed (monoecious). The relatively inconspicuous inflorescences consist of an inflorescence stem, piston and spathe. The inflorescence stem is shorter than the leaf stalks. The pale white piston (spadix) appears in a creamy white to green bract ( spathe ), the typical shape of the inflorescences in the arum family. On the piston there is a female, sterile and male section, each with unisexual flowers. Red or orange, single-seeded berries are formed.

Toxicity

All parts of the plant are poisonous. The sap can cause skin irritation.
