Agnetenkloster (Neustadt)

The Agnetenkloster (also Monastery of S. Agnetis ) was a monastery of Cistercian women in the old new town of Magdeburg . It was founded in 1230 and dissolved in 1810.

The Agnetenkloster was at the St. Agnes Church in the old new town. The Agnetenstrasse indicates its location. No other buildings have survived from the monastery complex.

history

The monastery named after St. Agnes was founded in 1230 by Archbishop Albrecht I von Käfernburg . Between 1253 and 1260, Archbishop Rudolf von Dingelstädt elevated the monastery church to a parish church. It was later merged with the neighboring Martini church . After the Reformation the monastery remained in existence, and in 1577 the last nuns moved here from the neighboring Lorenz monastery .

In 1810 the monastery was closed and on December 1st it was converted into a domain . In 1812 the remaining buildings were demolished for the construction of a fortress.
