Alain Kirili (born August 29, 1946 in Paris ) is a French sculptor .

life and work

Alain Kirili was born in Paris in 1946. Today he lives and works in his hometown and in New York City . Works by the expressionist sculptor David Smith (1906–1965) influenced the development of his work in his early years.

In 1966 Alain Kirili studied East Asian calligraphy with the Korean painter Lee Ungno ( 이응노 ) (1904–1989) in Paris . During this time he came into contact with the artists and intellectuals of the literary critical movement around the literary magazine Tel Quel . In particular with Philippe Sollers and Julia Kristeva , with whom he has been friends for many years. In the autumn of 1977 he married the photographer Ariane Lopez-Huici .

Kirili works with bronze, steel and aluminum, but also with clay. From 1978 he traveled to India several times , where he refined his knowledge of clay processing . He also takes a series of photos of the Yoni - Lingam liturgy in Thanjavur .

In 1980, Kirili rented a loft on White Street . Kirili claims in his biography that he has been a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York since 1982 - but is not listed on the SVA website.
