history

The settlement, which developed around 1890 near a former railroad depot , was promoted to town in 1909 and has served as Wheeler County's administrative seat since its founding in 1912 . The name of the city (Spanish for poplar ) was proposed by the daughter of the judge and later Senator John McCrae in memory of a former mission station in San Antonio . The first mayor of the Alamo was JM Fordham.
