Albany is located in south central Wisconsin, 16 miles north of the Illinois border . The city lies on both sides of the Sugar River , which forms part of the Mississippi River basin via the Pecatonica River and the Rock River . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located on the Mississippi and is 114 km west-southwest.

The Sugar River State Trail runs through Albany , a rail trail for hikers and cyclists that follows the route of a former railway line . In winter, the hiking trail can also be used with snowmobiles.
