Albert Boutwell

Albert Burton Boutwell (born November 13, 1904 in Montgomery , Alabama , † February 3, 1978 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Boutwell was born in Montgomery in 1904 to Clarence Columbus and Lydia Boutwell. He attended Greenville High School and graduated from the University of Alabama . There he received his Bachelor of Laws in 1928 . After completing his studies, he began practicing in Birmingham in 1928 .

In 1946, Boutwell was elected to the Alabama Senate. He was re-elected in 1950 and 1954. Elected lieutenant governor of Alabama in 1958 , he held this office between 1959 and 1963. Boutwell's next political office was that of Mayor of Birmingham. Here he was able to prevail in 1963 against Eugene "Bull" Connor . During his tenure, the assassination attempt on the 16th Street Baptist Church occurred .

Boutwell married Helen Balfour in Birmingham on November 23, 1934. The couple had three children, a daughter and two sons. Boutwell was a Methodist and a Freemason .
