Edward H. Moren

Edward Hawthorne Moren (born December 25, 1825 in Dinwiddie County , Virginia , † March 19, 1886 in Centerville , Alabama ) was after Andrew J. Applegate the second lieutenant governor of the US state of Alabama.

Edward Moren grew up in Virginia. His father Daniel Moren was also politically active: He served several terms in the Virginia Senate . After Edward Moren completed his medical degree in New York City , he applied for the US Army as an assistant surgeon at the time of the Mexican-American War . After the doctor of medicine left the army in 1848, he moved to Bibb County , Alabama, and continued to practice the craft of surgeon there. On July 5, 1860, he married in Centerville Mary Frances, whose ancestors also distinguished themselves in the political field.

His political career began in 1861 when he was elected to the Alabama Senate to represent Perry Counties and Bibb Counties . During this time he was involved in the finance and taxation committee as chairman of both committees. After the beginning of the Civil War , Moren enlisted again in the army, again as a surgeon. He later ran a hospital in Greenville .

In 1870, Moren was meanwhile employed by the University of Alabama , he was appointed lieutenant governor of the state after a successful election. For him this was the high point of his political career. He was the first lieutenant governor in Alabama to belong to the Democratic Party and held that office for two years.
