Hugh D. Merrill

Hugh Davis Merrill (born December 20, 1877 in Franklin , Heard County , Georgia , † January 5, 1954 in Anniston , Alabama ) was an American politician and lawyer .

Hugh Merrill attended schools in his hometown of Franklin and in Edwardsville , Alabama. In 1897 he received his Bachelor of Arts at Oxford College and then studied until 1898 at the University of Alabama . Merrill then worked as a lawyer with his father in Edwardsville.

Between 1900 and 1901 he was a member of the Cleburne County administration . In 1902 he moved with his father to Anniston , Alabama, where he partnered with his brother, Senator WB Merrill , six years later . At this point he had been an Aniston City attorney for two years. From 1910 he also established himself politically and was part of the leadership of the Democratic Party from 1912 to 1920. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives and temporarily acted as its speaker . In 1930 he was elected lieutenant governor of the state of Alabama. He took up this post the following year and held it until 1935.

Hugh Merrill was married to Martha Chitwood since December 27, 1906. The marriage resulted in a child, Ralf Merrill.
