Lucy Baxley (born December 21, 1937 in Pansey , Houston County , Alabama , † October 14, 2016 in Birmingham , Alabama) was an American politician and was Lieutenant Governor of Alabama from 2003 to 2007. In 2006, she was elected by the Democratic Party Party nominated as a candidate for gubernatorial elections in Alabama, but lost to Republican candidate Bob Riley .

biography

Lucy Baxley studied at Auburn University in Montgomery , where she did not graduate, but dropped out before finishing her studies. She married when she was 18; In 1974 she married Bill Baxley , a lawyer from Alabama, who later, like herself, was Alabama's lieutenant governor between 1983 and 1987. After an affair with her husband, Lucy Baxley divorced him and married Jim Smith in 1996.

In 1994, Baxley was nominated for the State Treasurer of Alabama. She won the election and was able to take office the following year. She also successfully competed in the election four years later, so that she was able to complete a second legislative period. It was not until 2003, after she won the election as lieutenant governor, that she resigned from this office. It managed to prevail against Bill Armistead , the Republican candidate , with 51.58% ; the other two candidates received very few votes.

In 2005, she announced that she would run for governor of Alabama. Her opponent in her own party was Don Siegelman , whom she was able to defeat with 60% of the vote. In the final election, however, she could not prevail against the incumbent governor, Bob Riley, as she received only 41% of the votes.

After her tenure as Lieutenant Governor ended in 2007, she planned a political comeback in 2008, which she succeeded. She won the election to chair the Alabama Public Service Commission against Republican Twinkle A. Cavanaugh.

Heart attack and recovery

On November 23, 2006, Baxley was taken to Birmingham University Hospital after suffering a moderate heart attack. The Baxley family who visited her asked the Alabama people to pray for her. More detailed information about their health status was not yet given. After Baxley was released from the clinic six days later, she went to the Lakeshore Rehabilitation Center, also in Birmingham, until December 29, 2006. After she was released there, she did not return to Montegomery to open the Senate session, as her neurologist had advised, but stayed in Birmingham. Although it was said that her health was stable, she found it difficult to move her left arm and legs.
