Albert Geßmann (born January 18, 1852 in Vienna , † July 7, 1920 in Prein ) was an Austrian librarian and politician ( CS ).

biography

Albert Geßmann studied history and geography at the University of Vienna and received his PhD. phil. From 1870 he was a civil servant in the war archive, from 1876 to 1903 librarian and curator at the university library of the University of Vienna .

From 1882 to 1888 and from 1893 to 1911 he was a member of the Vienna City Council. From 1891 to 1911 he was a member of the Austrian Reichsrat , from 1896 to 1915 a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament . In 1907 he became a minister without portfolio in the Beck cabinet , from 1908 he was minister for public work in Cisleithanien , from 1910 chairman of the Christian Social Association.

Alongside Karl Lueger, Geßmann was a co-founder of the Christian Social Party of Austria. He represented the idea of ​​Austria as a nation-state with extensive autonomy for the individual ethnic groups. In 1917 he was appointed a member of the Herrenhaus , the upper house of the Reichsrat.

Dr.-Albert-Geßmann-Gasse in Vienna's 21st district of Floridsdorf is named after him.

He was an honorary member of the Catholic student associations KÖStV Austria Wien (since 1890), KDStV Ferdinandea Prague (since 1902) and KDStV Frankonia Czernowitz (since 1903).
