Albert of Baligand

Karl Albert von Baligand (born November 23, 1881 in Munich ; † June 7, 1930 in Lisbon ) was a German lawyer , diplomat , consul and German envoy in Lisbon.

Life

Albert was a son of the Bavarian officer and chamberlain Max von Baligand (1839-1899) and his first wife Anna, nee Freiin von Verger (1846-1889). His grandfather Wilhelm von Baligand (1784-1852) was Lieutenant General and President of the General Audit Office of the Bavarian Army .

Baligand graduated from the pagerie from 1895 and passed his Abitur at the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1900 . He then studied law at the Ludwig Maximilians University , did his one-year voluntary service in the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" of the Bavarian Army and received his doctorate in 1906. In the same year he became a trainee lawyer in the Bavarian judicial and administrative service. In 1910, Baligand joined the Foreign Office and in 1912 was an extraordinary vice-consul in Amsterdam .

At the beginning of the First World War he was drafted as a first lieutenant in the reserve and was a company commander in the Reserve Infantry Regiment 7 until he was seriously wounded by a shot in the lung near Lunéville on August 26, 1914, and he was promoted to captain of the Landwehr and worked from 1915 to 1917 in the legal department of the Foreign Office. In 1918 he was a member of the German delegation in the negotiations on the Brest-Litovsk peace treaty .

From 1919 to 1920 he was head of the German consulate in Lausanne and from 1920 to 1921 he was consul in Geneva . Between 1922 and 1925 he took part in the Athens legation and then worked as a lecturer in the legation . In 1926 Baligand was ministerial director of the press department and from 1928 went to Lisbon as envoy.

On June 7, 1930 Baligand was shot by the jobless German sailor Franz Piechowski, who with his act by his paranoia wanted to free.
