Alexei Anatoljewitsch Schmidt ( Russian Алексей Анатольевич Шмидт ; born April 17, 1983 in Khimki , Moscow Oblast ) is a former Russian cyclist who raced on track and road .
Athletic career
Alexei Schmidt achieved his first sporting success on the track. In 2001 he was European junior champion in the points race , won bronze in the team pursuit at the junior track world championships with the Russian junior four-man and was U23 vice-European champion in the team pursuit together with Konstantin Ponomarjow . The following year he won silver at the U23 European Championship in scratch . In 2003 and 2004 he won further medals at the U23 European Championships on the track. In 2005 he became Derny European Champion in Dalmine, Italy, behind Cordiano Dagnoni . At the 2006 Track Cycling World Cup in Moscow he took second place with Ponomarjow in the two-man team driving .
In the same year Schmidt received his first contract with the Russian Continental Team Omnibike Dynamo Moscow . In his first season he won two stages of the Sochi Grand Prix and one stage of the Five Rings of Moscow race , and in 2006 he won a stage of the Tour of Hainan . In 2007 he won the overall ranking of the Sochi Grand Prix as well as one stage each of the Five Rings of Moscow and the Tour of Serbia . In 2009 he won the Maccabiade road race .
