Alexei Sergejewitsch Smirnow ( Russian Алексей Сергеевич Смирнов ; born January 28, 1982 in Kalinin , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been playing for Toros Neftekamsk in the Russian Vysschaja Hockey League since 2010 .

Career

Smirnow played in the youth system of HK Dynamo Moscow during his junior years . In 1998 he was already 16 years old in the team's reserve teams in the second-rate Wysschaja Liga and third-rate Pervaya League . After he had finished sixth with the Russian junior national team at the U18 junior world championship in spring 1999, Dynamos management loaned him to the second division THK Tver , the club from Smirnov's hometown, for the 1999/2000 season . Nevertheless, he came to his first appearance in the Super League for the first team Dynamo Moscow in the course of the season . In the spring of 2000, the striker played again in the U18 World Junior Championship and with seven points in five tournament games played a major role in winning the silver medal. Visibly supported by this, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim selected him as the fourth Russian in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in twelfth place overall.

Before Smirnow was finally brought to North America by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to sign a two-way contract valid for the National Hockey League and American Hockey League and moved to North America, he played in Russia for two years. He spent the 2000/01 season at Dynamo before moving to city rivals and army club HK CSKA Moscow for the 2001/02 season. In his first year of play in Anaheim, he played 44 games and scored five points scorer . At the same time, he was also part of the AHL farm team , the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , and achieved an impressive ten points in 19 matches. In the following season, his missions were split between the NHL and AHL, but this time he was largely in use for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. There he could not meet expectations with only 19 points from 51 games. Also in the 2004/05 season Smirnow played in Cincinnati, since the NHL season fell victim to the lockout . After his offensive production declined again, his contract was not extended in the summer of 2005.

In August 2005 the striker signed a contract with the super league team and reigning IIHF European Champions Cup winner HK Awangard Omsk . There he recommended himself through appearances in the second team for the super league and celebrated the Russian runner-up with Omsk at the end of the season. Despite the success, the Russian dared to make the jump to North America again in the summer of 2006 and completed the 2006/07 season with the Long Beach Ice Dogs from the ECHL . With 31 points from only 38 games, he knew how to convince there, but could not prevent missing the playoff qualification. In the summer of 2007 Smirnov returned to his home country again. There he first played for Vitjas Chekhov in the Super League and Krylja Sowetow Moscow in the Wysschaja Liga, but only made 17 appearances for both clubs. At the end of the season he changed teams again and joined Chimik Voskressensk , with whom he was able to celebrate the championship of the Vysschaya League.

Due to the withdrawal of Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg from the newly founded Continental Hockey League , Chimik took the vacated starting place in autumn 2008 at short notice. The team could hardly compete with the competition and was knocked off just behind Vitjas Chekhov, last of the championship. Smirnow was the team's top scorer with 15 goals and the second best scorer behind Sergei Lutschinkin with 22 points . Although Chimik filed for bankruptcy in the summer of 2009 and withdrew from the KHL, the center remained loyal to the team. By the end of the 2009/10 season he played again with Chimik in the second-rate Wysschaja League. For the 2010/11 season Smirnov signed a contract with Toros Neftekamsk in the Vysschaya Hockey League .
