Alfred Schmidt (born November 13, 1880 in Karlsruhe ; † June 14, 1956 in Bad Reichenhall ) was a German politician and Lord Mayor of the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr from 1928 to 1933 (1928–1930 initially acting).

Life

He grew up in Karlsruhe as the son of the local gas works director. After attending grammar school, Alfred Schmidt studied law in Heidelberg, Berlin and Freiburg and completed his studies with a doctorate. During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students Freiburg . Schmidt was director of the tax administration in Berlin-Charlottenburg before moving to Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1913. Here he worked as an alderman under Mayor Paul Lembke .

During the Spartacus uprising in 1919 and during the Ruhr occupation from 1923 to 1925, he was able to avert greater damage to the city of Mülheim and the population of Mülheim through his negotiating skills. After Lembke left the office of Lord Mayor, Alfred Schmidt initially took over his duties on a provisional basis. On February 26, 1930 he was officially elected by the City Council as the new head of the city with a majority of 47 to four votes.

Alfred Schmidt held office as Lord Mayor for three years. In 1933, when the German civil service was brought into line, he was forced to retire. As a pensioner, he lived in Mülheim for a few years before moving to Bayerisch Gmain in 1936 . As a major in the military district command in Bad Reichenhall, he was activated again from 1938 to 1945.

He died in Bad Reichenhall in 1956 after a brief, serious illness.
