Johann Heinrich Michels (baptized June 20, 1763 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † November 15, 1823 there ) was a German merchant, shipowner and mayor of the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr from 1813 to 1816.

Life

Michels' term of office was marked by the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon . After Bonaparte's defeat in the Battle of Leipzig , the French had been pushed back across the Rhine. The advancing troops of the powers allied against France used Mülheim as a stage where the residents of the city had to provide accommodation and food. Michels endeavored to alleviate the war stresses on the population of Mülheim and to direct the supply of troops to other routes by continuously speaking to the upper civil and military authorities. When the city treasury reached its limits in assuming the cost of supplying the troops, Michels advanced part of the required funds from his private assets. The repayment of these amounts dragged on until his death in 1823.

During his tenure, the Grand Duchy of Berg and with it the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr became Prussian.
