Peck Allmond

Peck Allmond (actually John Peckworth , born July 28, 1962 in Rochester ) is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist ( trumpet , saxophone , flute , valve trombone , clarinets , mellophone , euphonium ) and composer .

Live and act

Allmond grew up in Berkeley , where his family lived from 1969. He received his first trumpet from his grandfather Alden Webster, who was a professional cornetist in the bands of John Philip Sousa and Herbert Clarke in the 1920s . Peck studied with Benny Green , Craig Handy , Peter Apfelbaum and Steven Bernstein in the jazz program at Berkeley High School. After teaching with Warren Gale, John Coppola and Lawrie McGaw, he studied from 1980 at the New England Conservatory in Boston, a. a. with Fred Hersch , John McNeil , Roswell Rudd and Robert Nagel. He has also participated in workshops with the Art Ensemble of Chicago (1978), Charlie Haden (1981) and Dave Holland (1985). In 1982 Allmond returned to Berkeley and learned other brass and woodwind instruments by himself . In 1986 he earned a Bachelor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz and then lived in San Francisco, where he spent the following years a. a. worked with OJ Ekemode and the Nigerian All-Stars, Jai Uttal & The Pagan Love Orchestra, Don Cherry ( Multikulti 1991), Pharoah Sanders and Eddie Marshall . He was a member of Peter Apfelbaum's The New York Hieroglyphics and Jephte Guillaume's Tet Kale Orkestra ( Voyage Of Dreams ). In 1992 he released his self-produced debut album.

In 1993 he moved to Brooklyn ; in the New York area he then worked with Oliver Lake , Billy Drummond , Julius Hemphill and the Jazz Composers' Collective . He also directed his own formations and composed; some of his tracks have been played by the Jackie McLean Quintet. In 2003 he worked on Josh Roseman's album Treats for the Nightwalker . He released the albums Short Stories (2000, with Doug Weiss and Kenny Wollesen , among others ) and Kalimba Collage (2004) under his own name . Allmond has also worked on recordings for Dave Binney , Ray Brown , Steve Cutler , Craig Handy , Oliver Lake, Ray LaMontagne , Ed Reed and the group Orange Then Blue .
