Alter Kahn und Junge Liebe is a German inland navigation comedy by DEFA by Hans Heinrich from 1957. The film's alternative title is Sun over the Lakes and is based on a literary model by Dieter Noll .
action
The barges “Marie” and “Anne” are on their way from Berlin to Waren an der Müritz together with the tug “Horst” . The "Marie" is run by the old skipper Hein. On board are his wife Marie and their son Kalle, who should first gain experience in shipping. Since there is a large mortgage on the ship , Hein has had his boat overloaded with cement . Although he runs the risk of running aground while driving, he hopes that by winning the transport he will be able to pay off his mortgage faster. Last but not least, he wants to be able to hand over the ship to his son debt-free.
On the "Anne", boatswain Ernst and skipper Hermann have received reinforcement from Hermann's niece Anne, who is studying shipbuilding in Berlin and spending her holidays on the uncle's boat. The tugboat "Horst" is owned by the young captain Horst Richter, who is ambitious, but also a womanizer and superficial show-off.
Horst and Kalle fall in love with Anne. At first she puts up with Horst's attempts to flirt and spends a day on his tractor, but soon becomes more interested in Kalle. His strict father regards him more as a servant, but not as a future skipper. He does not receive any money from him and so he sells his fishing rod so that he can buy Anne a scarf shortly after her birthday. Shortly afterwards, Horst appears at Anne's house with a valuable brooch and supposedly overshadows Kalle's gift. When Kalle's father confronts his son about the fishing rod and he replies that he can do whatever he wants with his things and that he doesn't care about the boat anyway, his father slaps him in the face.
The relationship between Hein and Kalle is disturbed, especially since Hein insulted Anne as a bitch in front of everyone. There are also difficulties with the barge, as the Havel's fairway turns out to be too low, the “Marie” runs aground and part of the cargo has to be relocated to a truck. In the end, Hein even tries to cross one of the lakes with the boat at night and in thunderstorms on his own and without a tug, thus saving time and not least endangering the boat and the lives of the crew. Kalle takes the helm at his own risk and brings the boat back to the safe shore. Hein realizes that he has gone too far with his ambition and that he has not always treated Kalle fairly. Kalle and Anne, whose vacation is coming to an end, become a couple.
production
After The Barge of Happy People from 1950, Alter Kahn und Junge Liebe was the second inland navigation film by director Hans Heinrich. Götz George made his actual film debut here after two small roles at the age of 14.
The film premiered on February 22, 1957 in the Babylon cinema in Berlin .
criticism
The contemporary critics noted that the film had "become quite thin" and that it was "quite leisurely in terms of film dramaturg".
The lexicon of international films described the film as "occasionally bumpy, undemanding entertainment".
