Altmühltal with Brunst-Schwaigau and Altmühlsee (ID: 6728-471) is the name of a European bird sanctuary in Bavaria , which essentially serves to implement the Bern Convention as part of the Birds Directive ( Natura 2000 ) that came into force in 1979 . It has an area of 5,002.59  hectares . The bird sanctuary covers an area along the Altmühl in the Central Franconian districts of Ansbach and Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen and does not cover the entire area of the FFH area Obere Altmühl with Brunst-Schwaigau and Wiesmet .

The southernmost point of the bird sanctuary is near Markt Berolzheim and stretches northwest along the Altmühltal to Leutershausen , including the Altmühlsee with the bird island and the Wiesmet . For Colmberg there are two smaller enclaves of the bird sanctuary. The area is regularly flooded by the Altmühl, which has its lowest gradient here. The bird sanctuary is largely located in the two nature parks Frankenhöhe and Altmühltal ; a small part of the sanctuary extends on the edge of the Hahnenkamm , the southeastern fraction of the Franconian Alb .

The bird sanctuary Obere Altmühl with Brunst-Schwaigau and Altmühlsee is located in the Franconian Keuper-Lias-Land (11) within the main natural units of Frankenhöhe (114) and the foreland of the southern Franconian Jura (113).

The bird sanctuary is the most important breeding area for curlews and black godwit in Bavaria. There are several white storks and birds of prey.
