Amomum mizoramense is a species of the genus Amomum withinthe ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It occurs in northeast India.

description

Vegetative characteristics

Amomum mizoramense grows as a perennial , herbaceous plant that can reach heights of 0.5 to 1.8 meters. The rhizomes , slender with a diameter of 0.3 to 0.5 centimeters , are creamy white on the inside, covered with scales on the outside and form runners. The outside fluffy hairy scales are elongated with a length of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters. From each rhizome there are several slender shoot axes . At the base, the stems have green leaf sheaths with fluffy hairs on the outside and ciliate edges, which are 2 to 2.3 centimeters wide and have a rounded upper end. The leathery and bald membranes are 0.2 to 0.3 inches long with a truncated to edged upper end.

Each stem has 10 to 20 leaves. The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The green petiole is 0.2 to 0.5 inches long and glabrous. The simple leaf blade is 18 to 25 centimeters long and 3 to 5.2 centimeters wide, elliptical to elliptical-lanceolate with a wedge-shaped leaf base and a pointed and curled up to 4 centimeters long upper end. The upper side of the leaf is just like the underside of the leaf hairless. The leaf blades have a pressed leaf vein on the upper side. The leaf margins are wavy and the midrib is bare.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period as well as the fruit ripeness of Amomum mizoramense covers the months from March to July. Underground, directly from the rhizome, an inflorescence develops on a 4 to 10.5 centimeter long inflorescence stem , which is 2 to 3 centimeters long and in which the numerous flowers are close together. The pale brown, fluffy outside hairy and paper-like bracts are, with a length of 2.5 to 3 centimeters and a width of 0.6 to 1.8 centimeters, obovate with a spiky upper end and bare edges. The pale pink-red, membrane-like bracts are fused to form a 1.2 to 1.4 centimeter long and 0.4 centimeter wide tube, which is lobed twice. The two lobes of unequal size have a rounded tip and are covered with downy hair on the outside.

The hermaphroditic flowers are 3.2 to 3.5 centimeters long and zygomorphic and triple with white to pale yellow double perianth . The three membrane-like and white sepals, which are sparsely hairy on the outside and at the tip, are fused together in a tubular shape and are 1.7 to 2 centimeters long and about 0.4 centimeters in diameter longer than the corolla tube. Two of the three calyx lobes have a 1 to 1.5 millimeter long spike tip. The petals are fused into a 1.3 to 1.5 centimeter long and 0.3 to 0.4 centimeter wide, downy hairy corolla tube on the outside and the tube opening. The three white corolla lobes are bare on the outside as well as on the inside. The middle corolla lobe is 1.5 to 1.7 centimeters long and 0.7 to 0.8 centimeters wide, obovate with a hood-like folded, spiky top end and sparsely lashed edges. With a length of 1.5 to 1.7 centimeters and a width of 0.6 to 0.7 centimeters, the two lateral corolla lobes are slightly narrower, inverted-lanceolate, have a ciliate lower edge and are folded on one side at the upper end . Only the middle of the three stamens in the inner circle is fertile . The fertile stamen is 1.3 to 1.5 centimeters long and has a 0.3 to 0.4 centimeter long, mostly bare, white stamen . The two pale yellow halves of the downy, hairy anthers are oblong with a length of about 0.9 centimeters and a width of about 0.1 centimeters. Three of the staminodes of the inner circle have grown together to form a labellum. With a length of 1.3 to 1.9 centimeters, the obovate labellum is pale yellow with a yellow and red speckled center, densely downy hairy at the base of the top and has a wavy edge. The lateral staminodes are severely stunted. Three carpels are long to a dreikammerigen and 0.6 to 0.7 centimeters and about 0.3 centimeters wide, outward fluffy hairy ovary grown. Each ovary chamber contains numerous ovules . The 2.4 to 2.6 centimeters long stylus is hairy dense fluffy at the top, but bare at its base. The white scar is cup-shaped with a diameter of about 1 millimeter.

There are five to seven capsule fruits in a 11 to 14 centimeter long fruit cluster . The fruit stalk is about 2 inches long. With a length of 1.8 to 2 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 1.8 centimeters, the spherical capsule fruits turn red when ripe and contain many seeds. They have a downy, hairy, densely prickly surface. With a length of 3 to 4 millimeters and a diameter of 2 to 3 millimeters, the irregularly shaped, dark brown seeds have a white aril .

Occurrence

The natural range of Amomum mizoramense is in the state of Mizoram in northeast India . As far as is known so far, it includes the districts of Lunglei and Mamit . There it thrives in evergreen forests.
