Amomum nimkeyense is a species of plant from the genus Amomum withinthe ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It occurs in northeast India .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Amomum nimkeyense grows as a perennial , herbaceous plant that can reach heights of 1.5 to 2 meters. The egg-shaped rhizomes do not form runners, are 5 to 6 centimeters long and 5 to 7 centimeters thick, are ivory-colored in the middle and pale pink on the edges. Outside, the rhizomes are covered with paper-like and downy hairy scales. From each rhizome, several shoot axes, arranged in a cluster-like manner, emerge . At the base, the stems have reddish brown leaf sheaths with fluffy hair on the outside and bare, membrane-like edges. The thick and doubly lobed ligule are densely hairy on the outside and are 0.8 to 0.9 centimeters long; their upper end is rounded.

Each stem has five to seven leaves. The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The pale green petiole is 2 to 9 inches long and hairy downy. The simple leaf blade is 31 to 60 centimeters long and 16 to 27 centimeters wide and is ovate to linear-obovate with a pointed to wedge-shaped leaf base and a pointed to pointed upper end. The dark green upper side of the leaf is bare while the pale green underside of the leaf is densely covered with downy hairs. The leaves have a conspicuous leaf veining on the upper side. The leaf margins are somewhat wavy and the midrib is densely hairy on the underside of the leaf.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period as well as the fruit ripeness of Amomum nimkeyense covers the months May to September. Subterranean at the base of the stalk, directly from the rhizome, an inflorescence develops on a 4 to 5 centimeter long inflorescence stem , which is 9 to 10 centimeters long and in which the two flowers stand together. The outer reddish at the base and golden brown in the middle, the outside fluffy hairy and membrane-like cover sheets are at a length of 1 to 2.5 centimeters and a width of 1 to 2 centimeters egg-shaped with pointed, about 2 millimeters long upper end and fluffy hairy edges. The inner cover sheets look the same as the outer ones, but are about 3.8 centimeters long and about 2 centimeters wide and have an upper end that is about 4 millimeters long. Each of the bracts has a single flower. The pale yellowish brown and provided with a red ribbon outside fluffy hairy prophylls are at a length of 3 to 3.5 centimeters and a width of 1.3 to 1.5 centimeters oblong-shaped with an approximately 2 mm long upper end.

The hermaphrodite, yellow flowers are 5.5 to 6 centimeters long and zygomorphic and triple with double perianth . The three outer fluffy hairs, membrane-like, white and pink speckled sepals are 3.4 to 3.5 inches long and 1.5 to 1.7 inches wide. All sepals have a horn-like approach at the top that can be up to 0.7 inches long. The white and pink speckled petals are fused to form a corolla tube 2.8 to 3 centimeters long and 0.5 to 0.6 centimeters wide, with downy hair on the outside, which ends in three corolla lobes. The bald and cream-colored middle corolla lobe is 3.3 to 3.5 centimeters long and 0.9 to 1.1 centimeters wide, oblong with a hood-like folded top and 0.6 to 0.7 centimeters long and hairy Margins. The two fluffy hairy lateral corolla lobes are 3 to 3.3 centimeters long and 0.6 to 0.7 centimeters wide, somewhat narrower, lanceolate in shape, have a hairy edge and a rounded tip. Only the middle of the 2.3 to 2.5 cm long stamens of the inner circle is fertile ; it has a 0.8 to 0.9 centimeter long and about 0.35 centimeter wide, bare, white stamen . The two cream-white halves of the anthers, which are hairless at the base and at the top, are elongated with a length of 1.1 to 1.2 centimeters. The staminodes of the inner circle are fused to form an obovate, cream-colored labellum with a dark yellow center and a pink base, which is 2.8 to 3 centimeters long and 2.2 to 2.4 centimeters wide. The labellum is downy hairy at the base of the inside and has a finely notched edge. The lateral staminodes are missing. Three carpels are a dreikammerigen externally bare and with a length of 0.5 to 0.6 centimeters and a diameter of 0.6 to 0.7 centimeters spherical ovary grown. Each ovary chamber contains numerous ovules . The stylus is about 5.4 centimeters long and bare. The white scar is approximately spherical with a diameter of about 1 millimeter.

In each fruit cluster there can be one or two capsule fruits . The capsule fruits are egg-shaped with a length of 1.8 to 2 centimeters and a diameter of 1.4 to 1.5 centimeters, with a bare surface and are somewhat winged at the top. The capsule fruit contains many seeds.

Occurrence

The natural range of Amomum nimkeyense is only in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India . As far as is known so far, it includes the Lohit valley in the Lohit district near Tidding , where it grows on damp slopes. The associated plant species include Impatiens citrina and Impatiens siculifer as well as various species of Elatostema spec., The shade flowers ( Maianthemum spec.) And Pollia spec.

Taxonomy

It was first described as Amomum nimkeyense in 2018 by Mamiyil Sabu , Vadakkoot Sankaran Hareesh , Tatum Mibang and Arup Kumar Das in Phytotaxa , Volume 340, Number 2, Page 197. The specific epithet nimkeyense derives from Nimke , a holy place for the members of the district Lohit native Miju Mishmi tribe.
