history

The multi-wing, five-storey building of the Wedding District Court was built from 1901 to 1906 according to plans by Rudolf Mönnich and Paul Thoemer in the neo-Gothic style. The Albrechtsburg in Meißen is said to have served as a model . The building had a new type of substructure made of reinforced concrete piles , which were due to the damp subsoil. The street front of the main wing is about 120 meters long. There is a stair tower in the corners of the left and right wings to the side of the portal area. The entire facade is defined by arched curtain windows and tracery .

The portal area is extremely ornate with stepped gables , bay windows and battlements . An allegorical figure of Justitia is erected above the bronze and copper-clad entrance doors, protected from the weather by a porch, with depictions of coats of arms and animals , but who has no scales, no sword and no blindfolded eyes, but who holds a code of law and a shield. The 3.20 meter high figure was destroyed by vandalism in 1988 and replaced by a reconstruction in 2006. A significant part of the artistically demanding work was done by the sculptor Wiedemann, who was brought in by the Merk company. The torso of the statue kept in the Tegel JVA served as a template . After 1933, an imperial eagle with a swastika in an oak wreath was attached to the gable of the portal , which is still there today - only without a swastika. Behind the decorative facade of the main portal there is a monumental staircase, also designed in neo-Gothic style, which gives the building a resemblance to Gothic cathedrals.

The building was badly damaged in World War II, but was restored after the end of the war and the rear was extended in 1957/1958. The entire building complex is a listed building .

In the west wing of the court, newly built in 1987, all payment orders for the Berlin area of responsibility are drawn up using the most modern writing and computing systems.
