Jurisdiction

As the district court, the district court of Pankow / Weißensee is responsible for civil proceedings at first instance whose value in dispute does not exceed 5000 euros, as well as for rent disputes over housing and care matters.

In addition to the Tempelhof-Kreuzberg district court, the court is one of two Berlin district courts where jurisdiction is concentrated in family matters. Accordingly, the district court of Pankow / Weißensee is a family court for family matters from the district court districts of Mitte, Pankow / Weißensee, Wedding and Tiergarten.

In contrast, jurisdiction for criminal matters in all Berlin district court districts, including those of the Pankow / Weißensee district court, lies with the Tiergarten district court .

building

The district court of Pankow / Weißensee is mainly housed in the Parkstrasse 71 property in Weißensee. The neo-renaissance building was built between 1902 and 1906 according to plans by the Prussian building officials Paul Thoemer and Rudolf Mönnich .

The departments of family and care matters are in an under monument protection standing building complex , the early 20th century in Pankow built in Kissingen road 5/6 was. The plan for this courthouse also came from Rudolf Mönnich, who also designed the district courts of Lichtenberg , Weißensee , Schöneberg , Charlottenburg , Moabit and Lichterfelde . The courthouse was built between 1902 and 1906 as a mixture of Franconian Baroque and Art Nouveau . As a representative three-winged building, it offers a variety of styles typical of the Wilhelminian era . Since signs of subsidence became apparent over time, the foundations of the building were lined in 1995 to ensure stability.

A remand prison was attached to the court building on Kissingenstrasse, but it was closed in 1928 due to the low number of inmates. In the time of National Socialism there was an SA base here . During the GDR era, it was used by the Ministry for State Security as a remand prison for its Berlin administration. Since 1992 there has been a correctional facility for women here.
