Andreas "Anderl" Molterer (born October 8, 1931 in Kitzbühel , Tyrol ) is a former Austrian ski racer . In the 1950s he was able to celebrate over 50 victories in FIS races, won several medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships and was Austrian champion nine times.

Career

The trained carpenter came to the Kitzbühel Ski Club in 1948 and was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association in 1950. In the winter of 1950/51 he achieved his first podium places in important international races. A year later he celebrated his first victory in the combination of Zermatt . He achieved three more season successes in the downhill of the Gornergrat Derby and in the giant slalom in Arosa and Zürs .

Molterer achieved a real "overform" in the 1952/53 season. This winter he was able to win a total of 19 competitions (6 combinations, 5 slaloms, 5 giant slaloms and 3 downhill runs): u. a. he won the slalom and the combination at the Arlberg-Kandahar races and the important combinations in Wengen , Kitzbühel and Zermatt .

At the beginning of the following winter he was unable to follow up on these results for the time being, even at the 1954 World Cup in Åre , Sweden , he only won a bronze medal in the giant slalom. Only in the further course of the season was he able to win races again and, among other things, repeated his combined victories at the Arlberg-Kandahar races and in Zermatt. The 1954/55 season brought a total of eight wins. The most important were probably the successes in downhill and combined in Kitzbühel, but also in the overseas races he celebrated several victories and won the slalom, the giant slalom and the combined in Stowe as well as the combined Harriman Cup in Sun Valley .

The 1955/56 Olympic season began with Molterer winning the Lauberhorn slalom. At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , he won the silver medal in the giant slalom and the bronze medal in the downhill, in the slalom he dropped out. But he was always in the shadow of the dominant Toni Sailer , who won all alpine competitions at the games. In the further course of the season, Molterer celebrated a triple success in slalom, downhill and combined at the Arlberg-Kandahar races, won the Gornergrat downhill from Zermatt (also 2nd place in the combined and in the long downhill on March 18), the giant slalom in Arosa and Zürs as well as some other competitions, u. a. on February 26th the slalom and - thanks to 3rd place in the descent the day before - the combination at the "Eisgrabenrennen" in Kaltenleutgabe .

Sailer's superiority, especially in the downhill sections, was also given in the 1956/57 season. Molterer therefore had to be content with various slalom victories: He won that on January 14th on the Lauberhorn (also 3rd place in the combination), on February 3rd in the "11th. Garmischer Wintersportwoche “and on January 30th in Bad Wiessee (night slalom).

At the beginning of the following winter he celebrated on 18./19. January his next victories at the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel, in the downhill and combined. Before the World Championships in Badgastein in 1958 , he was shown in the world rankings compiled by the FIS as “number 1” in slalom, but the Tyrolean remained without a medal (ranks 5 in downhill and combined were his best placements).

In the winter of 1958/59 Molterer won the slalom and for the fourth time the combination of Kitzbühel and thus for the ninth time a competition at the Hahnenkamm races . Among other things, he won the downhill on January 23rd and (thanks to 2nd place in the slalom on January 24th) also in the combination in Megève and in the unfortunate downhill run on March 7th at the "Golden Wallbergschild" in Rottach-Egern (in the slalom on March 8th he finished second) and towards the end of the season he won the giant slalom on Patscherkofel near Innsbruck .

In the 1959/60 season, apart from the giant slalom victory at the Austrian Championships in Saalfelden on January 22nd, Molterer no longer achieved top placings. At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , he only came 12th in giant slalom and 19th in downhill, in slalom he was no longer allowed to start.

After the games, Molterer ended his career with the amateurs and switched to the professionals, where he celebrated a few more successes. He then worked successfully in the International Professional Ski Racing Association ( IPSRA ) in the USA, where he was also successful as a ski instructor for celebrities and as a model for ski equipment. In the summer of 1966 he founded the “Red Lodge International Summer Ski Racing Camp” at Red Lodge ( Montana ) with Pepi Gramshammer and Erich Sailer . To this day, American youths are taught alpine skiing here. In 1970 he opened Molterer Sports in Aspen ( Colorado ), which he led for 17 years.

"White lightning from fawn"

Because of his blond hair at the time, Molterer was often referred to as the “white lightning bolt from fawn” (in contrast to Toni Sailer , the “black lightning bolt from fawn”). He was generally not considered to be as nervous as Sailer; It was rumored that he had set similar or even better times than Sailer in training sessions or as a forerunner, but he could not have achieved this in the race.
