Angelo Maria Quirini

Angelo Maria Quirini or Querini OSBCas (born March 30, 1680 in Venice , † January 6, 1755 in Brescia ) was a Benedictine and cardinal of the Roman Church . He is the founder of the Biblioteca Queriniana in Brescia, which still exists today.
Quirini exchanged letters with important scholars and philosophers of his time, such as Voltaire , Johann Jakob Breitinger , Franz Ignatius Rothfischer , Abraham Gotthelf Kästner , Johann Christoph Gottsched , Georg Wilhelm Kirchmaier , Bernard de Montfaucon , Jean Henri Samuel Formey as well as with Friedrich II. And Pope Benedict XIV.
Life
Gerolamo Quirini was a descendant of the Venetian patrician family Quirini Stampalia. At the age of 17 he entered the Benedictine order in Florence in 1696 , took the name Angelo Maria and was ordained a priest on March 24, 1702 . He studied Greek, Hebrew and mathematics . From 1710 to 1714 he went on study trips to France, the Netherlands, Germany and England, where he met prominent representatives of the Enlightenment . From 1718 he was a member of the papal commission for the revision of Greek liturgical literature. In 1723 he was appointed Archbishop of Corfu , an office he held until 1727. He was ordained bishop on November 30, 1723 in Rome by Cardinal Francesco Barberini ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Augusto Antonio Zacco , Bishop of Treviso , and Archbishop Nicola Maria Tedeschi OSB.
In the consistory of December 9, 1726, Pope Benedict XIII took him . initially in pectore to the College of Cardinals , but did not announce his election until November 20, 1727. After receiving the cardinal ring and biretta on December 22, 1727 , Quirini was given the title church of Sant'Agostino as cardinal priest . Later he also got the title churches of San Marco and Santa Prassede . He was also from 1743 to 1754 cardinal priest of Santi Bonifacio e Alessio . He took part in the conclaves of 1730 and 1740 . In 1730 Pope Clement XII appointed him . Cardinal Librarian of the Vatican Library , 1740 Prefect of the Index Congregation .
Because of differences of opinion with Benedict XIV , he was transferred to the diocese of Brescia in 1751 . He founded the Biblioteca Queriniana , to which he bequeathed his art and antiquity collection.
Cardinal Quirini names the gable inscription of St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin as the main benefactor .
