Anna "Nandl" Werchota (born August 18, 1853 in Kaisersberg near Sankt Stefan ob Leoben , † April 28, 1932 in Vienna ) was an Austrian dialect poet and secretary for the kk state railways .

Life

Anna Werchota was born on August 18, 1853 as the daughter of a rent clerk and his wife Anna Werchota (* August 15, 1824, † April 11, 1866) in Kaisersberg Castle in Kaisersberg near Sankt Stefan ob Leoben. A few years later the father was transferred to Greifenberg Castle in the Hinterradmer ( Radmer an der Hasel ). Anna Werchota came to a friend of the family in Leoben , where she attended, among other things, the four-class elementary school and then the sewing school. She grew up partly in Leoben and partly in the area around Radmer. When she was just under 13, her mother died; her foster mother died in Leoben when Anna Werchota was 16 years old. In the year 1869 the father appeared as rent master of Straden . After the death of the mother and foster mother and the father's retirement, the eight children of the family, all of whom had poor upbringing, were scattered in all directions, with Anna going first to Graz and then to Vienna. Without any knowledge of language or music, she worked there under the poorest conditions as a manual worker and childcare worker. After years of poverty in which she tried to acquire a higher education on her own, she tried her hand at poetry in High German for the first time . However, these attempts brought little success. Her stories, written in the Styrian dialect and published in the journal An der Schönen Blauen Donau , brought far greater success . With the help of a native Grazer living in Vienna and the Association of German Styrians in Vienna , Werchota was lifted out of poverty. In the following years she developed into a very busy folk poet.

Her works include G'schicht'n aus'n Grob'n aussa (1890), What d'Nandl tells. G'schicht'n and G'sangln in Upper Styrian dialect (1900) or The beautiful Ploni and other stories in Upper Styrian dialect (1913). With her first work G'schicht'n aus'n Grob'n aussa , which was published by Leykam-Verlag in Graz and which she dedicated to Archduchess Marie Valerie , she achieved even greater fame than she has with her publications in the magazine An der Schönen Blauen Donau . Of I. Emperor Franz Joseph was subsequently with a renowned honor gift - an amount of 200 designated as a "small fee" Gulden - excellent. Critics have even compared her works with those of an Adalbert Stifter . The Austrian press, too, was consistently positive about the work, which consisted of stories, sagas and poems, including numerous quatrains. After she had previously published almost exclusively in relevant magazines, her works were also published for the first time in large daily newspapers, such as the press , from 1890 onwards . In the following years, numerous other works were published or printed in magazines and newspapers. In 1893 Werchota was represented with an article in the Graz writing calendar , which was published in the 110th year.

In addition, she often appeared in public; for example at the first Viennese writers evening organized by the Association for Advanced Women's Education in Vienna . Ten years after her first work, which was published by Leykam-Verlag in Graz, the Was d'Nandl told collection followed in 1900 . G'schicht'n and G'sangln in Upper Styrian dialect , published by Carl Gerold's Sohn Verlag . Local poet Peter Rosegger described the book in his monthly magazine Roseggers Heimgarten, magazine for the German house, as follows: “The people of Upper Styria can enjoy this little book. Those who know our alpine pastures will often bow their heads in agreement while reading and mutter: “True and genuine!” ”. At the 18th general assembly of the Association of Women and Women writers in Vienna , Werchota was elected to the board in spring 1903. A year later, she was re-elected as a board member at the 19th General Assembly. In May 1905, when Werchota had participated, among other things, in the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's death in front of his monument in Vienna , she was re-elected to the board of the Association of Writers and Artists. Also in 1906, when she was elected to the German Kernstock Society as a member of the advisory board, she was re-elected. At the 24th General Assembly in 1909, he was re-elected; it can be assumed that she has always been a member of the board in the meantime. In the following years 1910/11, 1911/12 and 1912/13 the native Upper Styria appears in the club management. In the spring of 1908 at the publishing house of Max Pock in Graz the song My Steirerlond! (for a voice with piano or zither accompaniment), Nandl Verkhota was introduced as the author of the text; the musical arrangement was taken over by Franz Blümel .

Werchota published her third book in 1913 through Paul Knepler's publishing house , which had only started working as a publisher two years earlier; the title: The beautiful Ploni and other stories in Upper Styrian dialect . In the years that followed, Verkhota was largely quiet, but it continued to appear in public. In the years 1913/14, 1914/15, 1915/16, 1916/17, 1917/18, 1918/19 she still appeared in the management of the Association of Writers and Artists . At the 34th general assembly of the association on April 30, 1919, Verkhota's departure from the association's board was announced; In addition to her, the two painters Bertha von Tarnóczy and Mina Hoegel left the board on that day . In 1925 she contributed to Eduard Stephan's two-volume home book Der Steirische Erzberg und seine Umgebung. represented.

With the first successes as a poet it was enough for a professional career as a Secretariat official at the Directorate General of the Imperial State Railways in Vienna, where she since 1890 especially in the Administration Building, the famous and later as "Blue House" in 2019 demolished complex at Vienna's Westbahnhof station operates was. Here she was employed, among other things, at the Historical Museum of the Imperial and Royal Austrian State Railways , which is housed in the building . She did not become a civil servant until 1896, which came out on the occasion of the announcement of her 25th anniversary in the Kleine Zeitung in August 1921. On April 28, 1932, Nandl Werchota, who had lived in Vienna until her death and remained unmarried, died after a long period of suffering at the age of 78. In the same year of her death, a memorial plaque was solemnly unveiled in Radmer in honor of Verkhota. On the occasion of her 95th birthday, the Obersteirische Volkszeitung commemorated the dialect poet from Upper Styria in 1948. A fragment of Werchota's estate with various poems in Upper Styrian dialect and with 53 watercolored pen drawings by the author is today (as of 2020) in the Styrian State Library in Graz .
