action

Annabelle is a little calf who is born on Christmas Eve in a farmer's stable. From her mother and the other animals, a horse, a pig, a rooster and a few other stable residents, she learns that the animals in the stable are personally visited at Christmas by Santa Claus, who gives them the gift of speaking for a day. When Santa Claus appears, little Annabelle is enthusiastic about the flying reindeer pulling his sleigh. She decides that she also wants to become Santa's reindeer. However, Santa Claus promises her that she will be able to join his reindeer next year when she is a little older.

Annabelle quickly becomes friends with a boy named Billy, the grandson of the farmer who owns the animals. Billy is not like other kids his age because he hasn't spoken a single word for several years. The reason for this is that one night he spent the night in the barn, and it started to burn up exactly at Christmas and had lost his parents in the fire. Since then, besides his best friend Emily, he has been mocked and marginalized by other children, especially by the two sons of the neighbor Gus Holder. Billy, Emily and Annabelle have many adventures together, including destroying the neighbour's garden fence when they are driving a sledge through the area. Gus Holder, a bitter, sullen man, demands Annabelle as compensation for his fence, but since Billy's grandfather knows how much his grandson is attached to the calf, he instead with a heavy heart sells a music box that once belonged to Billy's mother, his daughter Sarah.

At the same time, a custody fight breaks out between Billy's grandfather and Billy's aunt; the aunt wants to take Billy with her. Since he cannot speak, he cannot object to it himself. Christmas is just around the corner. Santa Claus visits the animals and asks Annabelle if he should grant her wish. Instead, she wishes Billy could speak again. Billy then tells his aunt that he doesn't want to leave his grandfather. That same day, Gus Holder shows up and gives Billy's grandfather the watch he bought back out of guilty conscience and apologizes for his sons' behavior. During this visit, he immediately falls in love with Billy's aunt, who will soon become his sons' stepmother.

Billy is overjoyed and wants to tell Annabelle about everything. Since he knows about the secret of the talking animals, he is irritated that Annabelle is only mooing. Their mother explains to Billy that Annabelle gave him her Christmas voice. She has also given up her desire to become a reindeer for him. However, she is not unhappy with her decision as she can see how good her wish is for Billy.

Time flies. Billy marries Emily and takes over his grandfather's farm after the death of his grandfather. Annabelle is getting older, but she doesn't forget her old wish. On Christmas night she runs from the yard, although she can hardly stand on her feet. Billy notices her absence and follows her. Annabelle collapses on an ice surface, abandoned by her strength. Santa Claus finds her there too and eventually turns her into a reindeer; she also gets her Christmas voice back. Billy says goodbye to his old friend and Annabelle flies, hooked to Santa's sleigh, with the other reindeer to deliver presents.
