Anne Bäbi Jowäger is a Swiss Heimatfilm by Franz Schnyder from 1962.

action

Jakobli, the only child of Hansli and the energetic Anne Bäbi Jowäger, fell ill with smallpox. Maid Mädi's home remedies don't get caught. At the insistence of the pastor, the village doctor prescribes a medicine that the superstitious mother does not use. She goes to Vehhansli, who prepares her own healing potion. Jakobli survived with one blind eye and many scars on his face. Since his health is still weak, Anne Bäbi takes the advice of the card reader Schnupfseckil, who urges her son to marry.

While Jakobli falls in love with the orphan Meyeli at the market in Solothurn, his mother tries to marry him off to Lisi, the daughter of Zyberlihoger-Joggi. Lisi and her greedy family are hoping for an amicable legacy. Jakobli refuses. Via Schnupfseckil, Anne Bäbi can find out that he already loves someone whose name begins with the letter M. The maid Madi is now also raising hopes. Lisi and Mädi are fighting over Jakobli. Despite all resistance, pastor and father Hansli enable Jakobli and Meyeli to marry.

The amiable nature of the new daughter-in-law also convinces Anne Bäbi, who takes Meyeli under her wing. Soon the grandson Köbeli will be born. When diphtheria breaks out in the Emmental, her grandson also falls ill. Instead of fetching the doctor, she trusts Vehhansli again. Köbeli dies. The priest and the doctor want to put an end to Vehhansli's activities, which has already claimed too many victims, and go to court. Vehhansli is too powerful, however. However, the process is lost and the doctor loses face in front of the farmers.

A young dean makes violent reproaches to the already shocked Anne Bäbi. She tries to take her own life and is saved by the doctor. Broken, she hands over the farm to her husband. Jakobli is overwhelmed, however, and Meyeli is harassed. In the meantime, diphtheria continues to rage. The farmers' trust in the doctor is returning. The doctor works to death. Meyeli, who is expecting a child again, is desperate. Jakobli succeeds in getting his mother out of passivity so that she can take matters into her own hands again.

background

Producer and director Franz Schnyder was not satisfied with the financial and artistic result of his film adaptation of the two-part novel Anne Bäbi Jowäger by Jeremias Gotthelf . With the help of Hermann Haller , the more comedic first part Anne Bäbi Jowäger - Part I: How Jakobli comes to a woman was shortened by a third and with the more dramatic second part Anne Bäbi Jowäger - Part II: Jakobli and Meyeli into a full-length film assembled together.

The first performance took place on September 1, 1962 in the Zurich cinema Scala. This theatrical version is no longer available.
