Anton Johan Wrangel (the elder), (born October 20, 1679 near Reval , † April 17, 1762 in Stockholm ), was a Swedish count and admiral in the Swedish Navy .

Anton Johan Wrangel was the son of Captain Tönnes Johan von Wrangel af Sauss and his wife Anna Margreta Ramm. His brother was Otto Reinhold Wrangel (1681–1747) who later became the royal Swedish major general of the infantry. The father came from the Wrangel family branch Itfer line .

He married Katarina Sofia Kruuse in 1716. From this marriage come the future Colonel Johann Reinhold Wrangel (1717-1794) and the later Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of Karlskrona , as well as Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish fleet Anton Johan Wrangel (the younger; 1724-1799). After the death of his first wife, he married Countess Anna Sofia Spens in 1742.

In 1747 he was raised to the baron status. A year later he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of Seraphines .

On November 22, 1751 he was raised to the rank of count . In 1752 he was accepted into the baron class of the Swedish knighthood (No. 219).

Military career

Wrangel embarked on an early military career, he was made Konstapel at the age of 21 . In the following years he served in the Dutch and English navies . In 1704 he returned to Sweden and was promoted to lieutenant at sea .

In 1709 he was appointed captain of the liner Verden and was transferred to Carl Raab's sea ​​squadron . The fleet was cruising in the waters off the coast of the Swedish province of Finland . In 1715 Wrangel was appointed commander of the orlog ship Wrangel . The warship was named after the von Wrangel family in recognition of the family's service to the Swedish crown.

In 1719 Wrangel was defeated and captured by the Russian commander Senjawin in the sea ​​battle near Ösel .

After the Peace of Nystad , Wrangel returned to Sweden in 1722.

He was appointed Schoutby Night in 1736 and Vice Admiral and Commander in Chief of Karlskrona in 1740 . In addition, Wrangel was appointed Imperial Councilor. Wrangel belonged to the political camp of the Hattarne ("hats"). He did not play a significant role in Sweden's domestic politics.

The declaration of war against Russia in 1741 was not supported by Wrangel himself. Nevertheless, as high commander of Karlskrona, he organized the armament and mobilization of the Swedish Navy.
