Anton Norst (born May 1, 1859 in Załucze near Sbarasch , † April 11, 1939 in Vienna ) (also Anton Nussbaum, OI Nussbaum) was an Austrian civil servant , local politician , journalist and author in Bucovina .

Life

Anton Norst was born as Oswald Isidor Nussbaum, son of Leo and Esther Nussbaum. His younger sister was the well-known Viennese reform pedagogue Eugenie Schwarzwald . His later name change is probably connected with his conversion from the Jewish to the Catholic religion. After graduation at the first state school in Chernivtsi and one year's voluntary military service in the Infantry Regiment. 41, he studied law at the Universities of Vienna and Chernivtsi and graduated with doctorate to Dr. iur. from. While still a student he wrote for the Neue Wiener Tagblatt and joined on 1 May 1882 in the editorial of the official government Chernivtsi newspaper one in which he in 1884 editor of the local section and the feature was to 1909 chief editor. Since 1892 he was a civil servant in the city administration of Chernivtsi. In 1897 he became university secretary (later official title: office director) and head of the university administration at the University of Chernivtsi . In 1890 he founded the literary monthly "Im Buchwald", which he published until it was discontinued in 1891. In addition to his official work, Norst wrote numerous commemorative publications and occasional poems such as prologues as well as poems, stories, humoresques and reviews, most of which were printed in newspapers and magazines in Bukovina. His patriotic “Song of the Bukovinian Gendarmes”, written in 1916, was set to music by Franz Lehár .

In 1900, Norst was elected to the municipal council of Czernowitz for the first time, to which he belonged until it was dissolved in 1914 due to the war. From 1904 to 1914 he was chairman of the preliminary commission responsible for drafting the city's budget, but was also particularly committed to promoting tourism and caring for the poor, edited the city's bulletin, the weekly Czernowitz newspaper that has been published since 1898 , and represented the city at the Austrian Association of Cities . On April 11, 1912, he was unanimously made an honorary citizen of the city of Chernivtsi. He was active in numerous honorary positions; Among other things, he was chairman and honorary member of the journalists and writers association of Bukovina.

At the beginning of the First World War in 1914, Chernivtsi was temporarily occupied by Russian troops. Norst stayed in town during this time. After the reconquest by Austrian troops, he was appointed government commissioner by the city ​​commander on October 22, 1914 and ran the city's business. In the further course of the war he served as a reserve captain in the Landwehr at the State Gendarmerie Command No. 13 in Chernivtsi. In the spring of 1918 he helped reopen the university that had been relocated to Vienna during the war. After the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the annexation of Bukovina to Romania , Norst gave up his position as head of the university chancellery at the end of July 1919, since the University of Chernivtsi was now Romanian-speaking instead of German-speaking, and moved to Vienna, where he worked in the Ministry of Education and in 1920– 1922 worked for the Central Statistical Commission . In 1921 he received the title of court counselor . His grave is in the Hietzinger Friedhof .

Anton Norst was married to Olga geb. Weckenmann (1869–1948), with whom he had the daughter Elisabeth Friederike (called Else, 1892–1969) and the son Anton Heinrich (1900–1974). His daughter studied natural sciences in Czernowitz and Vienna, which she completed with a doctorate from the mathematician Hans Hahn . She taught at the girls' high school Albertgasse in Vienna , founded by Marianne Hainisch , and married the Polish physicist Wojciech Rubinowicz in 1921 . His son was a lawyer and the father of Marlene Norst .
