Marlene Norst

Marlene Johanna Norst (born March 24, 1930 in Vienna ; † December 20, 2010 in Sydney ) was an Austrian linguist, educator and philanthropist in Australia.

Marlene Norst was the daughter of the lawyer Anton Heinrich Norst (born December 30, 1900 in Chernivtsi , † September 8, 1974 in Sydney ) and the English scholar M ary Norst b. Widrich (born August 6, 1900 in Vienna; † September 22, 1967 in Sydney) and granddaughter of the writer and journalist Anton Norst (born April 30, 1859 in Załuże near Zbaraż (formerly Galicia ); † April 11, 1939 in Vienna ) who was a brother of Eugenie Schwarzwald .

Life

After the annexation of Austria in March 1938, the Norst family fled because of the threat of persecution by the Nazi regime. After a short stay from May 22 to June 22, 1938 with Anton's sister, Else Rubinowicz (1892–1969), wife of the physicist Wojciech Rubinowicz , in Lemberg / Poland , the Norsts came to Denmark , where they stayed with the writer on the island of Thurø Karin Michaëlis , a friend of Eugenie Schwarzwald , stayed for a few months and met Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel there . They later came to Canada and eventually settled in Australia . Marlene's father found a job in a canning factory in Leeton, New South Wales, as a food chemist and was hired to set up a laboratory there.

In Leeton, Marlene attended a Catholic elementary school and then came to Mt. Erin, to a middle school and boarding school run by Catholic nuns in Wagga Wagga .

After graduating from high school, she studied at the University of Sydney . There she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts on May 16, 1951 and a Master of Arts on May 8, 1963 . On March 17, 1972, she received her PhD from Newcastle University . The title of her doctoral thesis was: “Julius Duboc and Robert Waldmüller. An Inquiry into some Aspects of the Literary Biographical Genre " .

After graduation she taught at Naremburn Boys 'School and Riverside Girls' School (both in Sydney) and at Kempsey High School, after which she moved to London, where she taught for two years at the Walworth Comprehensive School. In the meantime, during her stay in Europe, she spent three months in Vienna, where she passed the university language test at the University of Vienna . Among her students in Kempsey (New South Wales) was the native Harry Penrith, who later became Burnum Burnum .

1957-1967 she taught at the German faculty at Newcastle University.

In 1964 she received a grant from the government of the Federal Republic of Germany and studied German Biedermeier literature at the University of Heidelberg .

1968–1986 she worked as a professor at Macquarie University in the Department of Modern Languages. During this period she visited the University of Edinburgh in 1974 and the University of Vienna in 1978 for research stays. Main focus: linguistics , language didactics , sociolinguistics , children's literature . She took part in numerous scientific conferences (e.g. in Mexico and the Netherlands in 1982 ) and gave lectures at the universities in London , Vienna , Hamburg and Oldenburg .

In 1986 she received a scholarship from the Austrian government for research work on the history of the waves of Austrian emigration to Australia . From this work, as well as extensive research in Australia and numerous interviews with Austrian emigrants in Australia and Austria, the book "Austrians and Australia" , published in 1988 (together with Johanna McBride), emerged.

She resigned from Macquarie University in 1986 and has been a freelance artist ever since.

In the Vienna Natural History Museum she discovered the drawings of the forgotten Austrian botanical draftsman Ferdinand Bauer (1760–1826), who documented Australia's flora and fauna in the 18th century . At the suggestion of the British Museum , which has the corresponding color drawings, she wrote a book about him.

Since 1989 she has been running a biographical project Family Reflections , in which she supported families in documenting and writing down their stories. She was friends with the Australian Aboriginal activist Burnum Burnum and wrote his biography Burnum Burnum: A Warrior for Peace at his request .

As a longtime member of the Sydney University Musical Society and an avid choir singer, she has participated in many concert tours and performances.

She led u. a. at TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and Nature Care language courses for immigrants in Australia and was involved in social and educational projects for homeless children and former prisoners.

Marlene Norst has translated several contemporary German-language theater plays into English (including Igor Bauersima , Falk Richter , Lukas Bärfuss , Roland Schimmelpfennig , Reto Finger , Margareth Obexer , Agnes Gerstenberg ).
